In the 1950s, Barbara Joseph and her husband Roy were farming in the heart of mid-Wales near Welshpool. Barbie had been an English student at Cambridge but had fallen in love with Roy when she went to work on the farm during the Second World War. They were married in 1945 and four children completed their family. You could say the business began with a few packets of seeds to brighten up the farm which sparked a passion for Barbie which became all-consuming.
Today, the Joseph family along with a staff of around 80 are still running their thriving horticultural business, growing a vast range of plants on over 500 acres of land whilst the requirements of the retail market are met by the Dingle Nursery and the nearby Derwen Garden Centre. Barbie and Roy's legacy is now an R.H.S. Partner Garden, open to the public every day.
